Each week students come to me with stories about what they have heard regarding college admission's criteria. Some think that the SAT or the ACT is most important; others think they MUST take AP classes to get in to a good college.
All things considered, grades are often the #1 factor in college admissions. However, there are a variety of other factors that are considered. Maybe a student has a high ACT or SAT score but a low GPA. That might work out in his or her favor, especially if there is a good explanation as to why the GPA is low.
Sometimes, students arrive at the decision to attend college late in their high school careers. However, it's never too late if a student has the maturity and motivation to succeed. Use a site to find a college that matches personal preferences or research admissions requirements for colleges of interest.
Most importantly...students should NOT rely on what they hear in the halls at school. Some of my bravest students have received the most help by calling the admissions office of the school they think is their best match. Be sure questions are specific, and be sure answers can't be found on the school's website.
